Sediment filters come in different sizes measured in microns, with smaller micron ratings capturing smaller particles. For visibly polluted water, a larger sediment filter (such as 20 or 50 microns) is recommended initially to prevent clogging of subsequent filters.

This sediment filter is often the first stage in a Reverse Osmosis system, acting as a net to catch sand, dirt, silt, rust, and other fine particles.
